Their Majesties' State Visit to the Republic of Austria in 1964


By mid-1960, His Majesty had embarked on a whirlwind tour of 15 nations in North America and Europe. Between 1961 and 1967, His Majesty visited 13 other countries in Asia, Australia, and made similar visits to Germany, Austria and the United States.

His Majesty’s visit to the Republic of Austria highlighted a close and cordial friendship existing between the two countries.

His Majesty granted Colonel Podhajsky, Head of the Viennese Spanish Riding School, with decorations.

The highlights of the visit was probably the performance at the Vienna Concert Hall on 3 October 1964 where His Majesty's musical compositions, Kinari Suite, Falling Rain, Love at Sundown, March Rajanavikayothin and March Rajavallop, were performed by the N.O. Tonkunstier Orchestra and received an overwhelmingly positive response from not only the audiences in the Concert Hall but also music lovers across the country, as the concert was broadcasted live on radio.

During the first part of the programme, the same Johann Strauss's works that had been performed for King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) during His state visit to Vienna in 1897 was again performed by the N.O. Tonkunstier Orchestra for Their Majesties the King and the Queen.

On October 5, 1964, the world-renowned Institute of Music and Arts of Vienna has honoured His Majesty the King with the Institute’s 23rd Honorary Membership. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand was the first Asian composer to receive such an honour.
