Non-Immigrant Visa ED (Education)

1. ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS FOR ED VISA

This type of visa is issued to applicants who wish to enter Thailand for the following purposes:

  • to study in academic institutes
  • to visit on a study trip or observation tour, participate in projects or seminars, attend a conference or training course organized by the government agency, state enterprise, international organization, Embassy and Consulate 
  • to study as a foreign Buddhist monk

2. ED VISA CONDITIONS

2.1 ED Visa is valid for a single entry for education purposes only.

2.2 ED Visa is valid for 90 days from the date of issuance. Travellers must enter Thailand within the said 90-day period. They will be allowed to stay in Thailand for a period of up to 90 days, counting from the date of entry. During the 90-day period of stay, if they wish to leave and re-enter Thailand, they are required to apply for a re-entry permit (single or multiple) before departure. If they leave Thailand without a re-entry permit, the current stay permit shall be considered void.

2.3 Extention of visa is possible. Those qualified may obtain an additional one-year stay permit, counting from the date of entry to Thailand. The extension of stay is at the discretion of the immigration officer. Extension application can be made at the Office of Immigration Bureau (visit www.immigration.go.th for more information)

2.4 If the ED Visa holder breaches the entry conditions, the stay permit will be revoked and he/she will be prohibited from entering Thailand in the future.

3. ED VISA APPLICATION PROCEDURES

3.1 PREPARE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS AS FOLLOWS:

  1. Completed application form - to download CLICK HERE
  2. Passport with at least two empty pages and validity not less than 6 months from the date of planned entry to Thailand
  3. One recent passport-sized photograph (4x6 cm), taken within the past six months
  4. Copy of registration of residency of Austria, Slovakia or Slovenia if you are not a citizen of Austria, Slovakia or Slovenia
  5. A copy of bankbook with minimum balance of 500 Euro on account
  6. Proof of current or previous education
  7. Visa processing fee: 70 Euro (in cash only / non-refundable)
  8. Envelop addressed to applicant's own address & postal fee (10 Euro for EMS delivery) for return of passport 
  9. Other required documents as determined by the purposes of entry as follows:
  • For those who wish to attend public schools (colleges, universities and etc.):
    • A copy of the letter of acceptance from the institute 
    • Letter from the institute addressed to the Royal Thai Embassy in Vienna
  • For those who wish to attend private schools (colleges, universities and etc.):
    • Letter of acceptance from the institute
    • Letter from the institute addressed to the Royal Thai Embassy in Vienna
    • Copy of the license to establish an educational institute issued by the competent authority or Private Education Commission
    • Certificate issued by a government agency at the level of department or equivalent or by Provincial Governor in charge of that particular institution (except in the case of enrollment in an international school or university)
  • For those who wish to attend a conference, a training, an internship or a course organized by the government agency, state enterprise, international organization or Embassy and Consulate:
    • Proof of current employment
    • Official note or invitation letter clarifying the purpose of travel from the concerned organization
    • Letter from the organization addressed to the Royal Thai Embassy in Vienna
    • For private organizations and companies applicant must also provide the official registration of the companies.

3.2 MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO SUBMIT THE ABOVE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS IN PERSON WITH THE ROYAL THAI EMBASSY IN VIENNA

  • Please note that it is not possible to apply for the visa via post. All postal applications will be rejected.

4. ED VISA PROCESSING TIME

  • Visa processing time is usually 3 days / passport will be sent back by post
  • Certain applications which require special consideration may take longer to process.

5. REMARKS

  • Documents in foreign languages must be translated into Thai or into English.
  • In the absence of a required document, a letter explaining the unavailability of such document must be provided.
  • Consular officers reserve the right to request additional documents as deemed necessary.
  • Visa processing fee is subject to change without prior notice.
  • Nationals of certain countries are required to apply for a visa only at the Thai Embassy or Consulate-General in their home/residence country or at the designated Thai Embassy.
  • The applicants must provide genuine documents and information. If the applicants provide fraudulent documents or false information, their applications will be rejected and they may be prohibited from entering Thailand in the future.

6. OTHER ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: CERTIFICATE OF ENTRY & OTHER DOCUMENTS

Infographic New COE System

  • Upon receiving ED Visa, the travellers must apply for the Certificate of Entry (COE). Without the COE, travellers will be refused entry to Thailand even if they hold valid visas. For more information on Thailand's entry regulations, please visit www.thaiembassy.at/en/coe.
  • ED Visa holders must prepare the following required documents to apply for COE online (APPLY HERE: https://coethailand.mfa.go.th/)
    • For pre-approval stage (Registration):
      • Copy of passport
      • Copy of valid ED Visa
      • Confirmation or acceptance letter from the school in Thailand
    • For final approval stage (Confirmation):
      • Flight confirmation
      • Confirmation of Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) or Alternative Local Quarantine (ALQ) hotel booking for a minimum of 15 nights, starting from the date of the arrival in Thailand. Please reserve the room directly with the hotel, requesting for ASQ/ALQ package. Booking may also be made via http://www.agoda.com/quarantineth / https://asq.locanation.com / https://asq.ascendtravel.com  (reservation must be made for 15 nights). Booking made via other online agents without "ASQ/ALQ package" will be rejected. For a list of approved ASQ/ALQ hotels, CLICK HERE. OR Confirmation of Organizational Quarantine (OQ) provided by approved educational institutions.
      • Health insurance (or "confirmation letter issued by the insurance company) in English which EXPRESSLY covers medical treatment expenditures of COVID-19, with minimum coverage of 100,000 USD during the entire stay in Thailand. Travellers are advised to purchase their health insurance which meets Thailand's entry criteria here: http://covid19.tgia.org/ Those with existing health insurance are advised to ask their insurers for "cover letter" confirming that the insurance covers COVID-19 with minimum coverage of 100,000 USD.
  • At check-in and upon arrival in Thailand, all travellers are required to present the following documents:
    • COE
    • Valid visa / re-entry permit
    • Fit to Fly Health Certificate issued no more than 72 hours before departure time
    • Medical Certificate with a laboratory result indicating that COVID-19 is not detected, using RT-PCR method, which has been certified or issued no more than 72 hours before departure time
    • Health insurance which meets the entry requirement & ASQ/ALQ/OQ hotel confirmation
  • All travellers who have received COEs are required to download, and register via, ThailandPlus Application. They are required to show a QR code generated from the registration via the Application to be scanned by Thai authority upon arrival in Thailand. To download, CLICK HERE
